There is a saying among photographers: “the best camera is the one you have with you”. The appearance of mobile telephones with cameras, and especially the improved quality of the sensors, makes our phone the best camera since we almost always have it with us. However, we don’t always know how to take full advantage of our devices. Here are a few simple tips on how to squeeze the most out of your phone camera:

Get to know your camera

This applies to any camera, and should be obvious to any photography buff… although the majority of users never read the instructions or user manual for their cameras. Regardless of the type of camera you’re using its important to get to know all of the features it has to offer. You should, of course, read the user manual, but, if you’re lazy, or just not the type to do that, you can find tutorials about your phone on the internet. Adjusting the colour balance, the ISO or the duration of exposure can be crucial to taking good pictures.

Learn a little bit about photography

Apart from knowing your camera, learning a few basic concepts about photography, such as aperture, ISO, or shutter speed, will notably improve your photos. Although it may sound strange, the latter is less important than the former. Depending on your device or even the app you use, you can use some parameters or others. Knowing the effect of an increased ISO won’t help you if you don’t have that option when taking your photo.
